Paolo Bertolucci has no doubts: Jannik Sinner is set for the semifinals of Wimbledon, following a draw that, according to the former Italian tennis player, has paved the way for him to face Novak Djokovic. The confidence is such that Bertolucci considers it almost inevitable to see the Italian among the tournament's final four, unless a genuine catastrophe occurs, like the one that recently happened in Paris.
The former player, now a commentator for Sky Sport, stated in the pages of Gazzetta dello Sport: “In short, the draw has opened the way for him, at least until the semifinals against Novak Djokovic. Sports and tennis have accustomed us to surprises, but barring catastrophes – like what happened in Paris – it’s hard not to imagine Jannik Sinner at least among the top four in the tournament.” For Bertolucci, there are no rivals of sufficient stature to challenge the Alto Adige native before the decisive phase.

These words came before the match between Sinner and Japan's Shintaro Mochizuki, where the Italian faced little difficulty and won in three sets. In the other round of 16 match, misfortune struck Hubert Hurkacz, a former semi-finalist in 2021, who was forced to retire due to injury against Jan-Lennard Struff. The German will now compete in his first quarter-final at a Grand Slam tournament.
Bertolucci reinforced his analysis of Sinner's journey: “Champions use the early matches to adapt to the changes in surface, to test their feeling and find the rhythm of their shots, and then they elevate their level as the technical difficulties increase. Sinner is aware of the moment and the way he is managing his path certainly gives us reasons to be optimistic.”
In his commentary for Sky Sport, Bertolucci emphasized Sinner's improvements throughout the tournament: “The start wasn't exactly the best, but objectively, I was never worried, even when he faced some difficulties. He was clearly better in the second and third rounds compared to the first. I think he needed time to absorb the shock of Paris because, without a doubt, he was morally disappointed with what happened. We always saw him improving,” explained the former tennis player.
With Sinner demonstrating increasing confidence and convincingly overcoming each obstacle, expectations for a presence in the semi-finals of Wimbledon are, for Bertolucci, more than justified. The atmosphere of optimism surrounding the Italian is palpable, leading one to believe that, barring unforeseen circumstances, his name will be among the protagonists in the decisive stages of the tournament.
