A wave of outrage swept across social media after Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla directed racist insults at Kylian Mbappé, triggering one of the biggest controversies of the World Cup. The French forward became the target of shocking comments after, at the end of the match against Paraguay, he failed to greet goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

Mbappé's behavior, seen by many as a breach of fair play following a match marked by tension, prompted Amarilla, 61, to take to the social network X to post offensive messages. “This idiot hasn't even learned to write,” the senator wrote. In an even more aggressive tone, she added: “Instead of sucking on breast milk, he was sucking on coconuts, and the most educated beings he ever heard were chimpanzees.” Amarilla did not stop there and addressed Paraguayan goalkeeper directly: “You should have given him the finger, Orlando Gill. I do it in the Senate and nothing happens.”

This incident occurs within an already tense context surrounding the Paraguayan national team. Prior to this incident, former goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert had already sparked controversy by labeling the French team as an “African selection,” fueling heated discussions about racism and xenophobia in international football. During the same match, there were also suspicions of insults directed at the late mother of French coach Didier Deschamps, exacerbating the hostile atmosphere between the teams.

Amarilla's statements have sparked a wave of outrage, with many supporters and public figures demanding consequences for the senator and emphasizing the seriousness of racist comments on a global stage like the World Cup. The reaction to these offensive words promises to continue, with public pressure mounting for disciplinary and political measures to be taken.

The scandal casts a shadow over Paraguay's participation in the competition and elevates the debate on racial intolerance in sports, especially at a time when world football seeks to project an image of inclusion and respect. The response from sports and political authorities to this case is now awaited, as it could influence the atmosphere and stance of teams in the upcoming matches of the tournament.
