After a crucial triumph, Thomas Frank, the Danish manager of Tottenham, celebrated his team’s much-needed 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund with a toast to renewed hope. However, the win is not just a reason for celebration; it is a call for consistency that has been lacking in the Spurs’ campaign so far. Dominic Solanke’s goal, in his first start of the season, eased the pressure on Frank, especially following the recent home defeat to West Ham, which sparked discontent among fans, who claimed the manager was “on his way out.”

Despite uncertainties about his future, which were discussed over lunches with key figures at the club on Monday, Frank saw his fortunes change rapidly. Cristian Romero, the captain, put the Spurs ahead just 14 minutes in, followed by a goal from Solanke, who was fortunate to score from close range after a defensive error from the opposition. The red card shown to Daniel Svensson, which left Dortmund with 10 men, further simplified the path to victory.

Frank wasted no time looking ahead, as attention now turns to the next challenge in the Premier League against Burnley. When asked if the victory could prove that he deserves to remain in charge, Frank replied with a smile: “I think it’s about the team and everything that surrounds it, but of course I understand the question. What I feel is that the coaching staff is with us, the players are with us, the management is aligned with what we want. We are doing a lot of things in the right direction, and today was a great performance and a great win.”

The Danish coach acknowledged the need to build on this positive result: “We are running a lot, and that is a very good sign. It is a healthy sign of culture, and we are building something, step by step. We could have easily achieved better results in the last games, but we didn’t. The important thing now is to follow up this victory with a good performance and a win against Burnley.”

The victory over Dortmund not only brought relief to Frank but also an opportunity for celebration. “I think two big glasses of red wine will be necessary; I will enjoy that,” the coach said, with a smile that reflected the lightness of the moment.

On the other hand, Dortmund’s coach, Niko Kovac, acknowledged Tottenham’s superiority and did not contest the red card shown to Svensson for a harsh tackle on Wilson Odobert, even though the intensity of the contact was debatable. Kovac commented: “Congratulations to Tottenham, a well-deserved 2-0 victory. We didn’t play well in the first half. We were very passive, not aggressive in individual duels, which made things difficult. We knew the situation. We expected the opponent to be physically strong, but we didn’t compete, we conceded the 1-0 and then came the red card, which was harsh, but in the end, the referee made the correct decision. We were better in the second half, but it wasn’t enough.”

Now, with the pressure lifted, Thomas Frank can prepare his team for a decisive challenge, hoping that the victory over Dortmund marks the beginning of a new phase of consistency and success.
