The forecast of heavy snowfall and strong winds over the next 24 hours has raised serious doubts about the feasibility of all the matches scheduled for this weekend. In statements to DPA, the German Football League (DFL) revealed that despite the adverse weather conditions, it expects all nine matches in the top division to go ahead as planned. However, a DFL spokesperson did not hide their concern: “The DFL is alarmed. But at this moment, all matches are scheduled to be played,” they stated, leaving open the possibility of changes.
The northern and eastern regions of Germany are the most affected, and the matches involving St. Pauli against RB Leipzig, Werder Bremen against Hoffenheim, and Union Berlin against Mainz are under special scrutiny. St. Pauli has already spoken out, warning that it cannot guarantee the match against Leipzig will take place as planned. “Given the weather conditions, we cannot guarantee that the match will be held under the current circumstances,” the club declared.
On the other hand, fans of Union Berlin have shown admirable community spirit, offering to clear snow in preparation for the game against Mainz. Christian Arbeit, spokesperson for Union Berlin, was optimistic: “If we had to play today, the match would happen,” he told Bild. “We are working day and night to make everything possible. The fans and the team are helping and hope it will be successful.”
