“Gvardiol’s departure does not change Manchester City’s plans for the January transfer market.”

Manchester City faces a new storm in defense with the confirmation that Josko Gvardiol will be out for a “long time” due to a leg fracture, a result of the clash with Chelsea that ended in a 1-1 draw. This setback further exacerbates the injury crisis in defense, where Ruben Dias has also joined the list of absentees with a muscle injury that will keep him sidelined for several weeks.

Pep Guardiola, the shrewd manager of the team, addressed the situation at a press conference ahead of the clash against Brighton, revealing concerning details. “Dias? It’s a muscle injury. Four to six weeks. Gvardiol is out for a long time,” Guardiola stated, making it clear that the situation is not easy for the team.

Gvardiol’s absence is a heavy blow for City, but it is not the only concern. The overlooked John Stones continues to struggle with persistent injuries, which have kept him off the pitch for most of the past seasons. Guardiola commented: “He is a really important player for us. He was injured for a long time last season and, apparently, this year is the same. He is trying to do everything, but he is not fit.”

Despite the difficulties, Guardiola remains optimistic. “Everyone knows that the injury situation is complicated. We have Nathan Ake back, a central defender. Max Alleyne has returned from his loan at Watford. We thank Watford for what they did for the young player. That is the situation. We can cope.”

Meanwhile, there are rumors linking City to a potential signing of English central defender Marc Guehi, whose contractual situation at Crystal Palace could make him available at an affordable price. However, Guardiola made it clear that the club’s priority is to balance immediate needs with long-term sustainability. “We have six or seven injured players. If we have 35 players in the squad, that cannot be financially sustainable. We have to adjust the numbers financially, but I am really happy with the squad we had in pre-season and so far. It is what it is. Over the years, this happens sometimes,” he explained.

Guardiola, who spent around £180 million on signings last year, does not expect to repeat the same approach this month. “Maybe we can do something, but it’s completely different [from last season]. We are not going to buy four or five players like last time,” he stated, setting a tone of caution.

Manchester City enters the game against Brighton after two winless matches, having drawn with Sunderland and Chelsea, resulting in a six-point deficit to leaders Arsenal. The pressure is mounting, and the team’s ability to overcome these adversities will be tested in the upcoming matches. Guardiola, however, is confident: “Josko and Ruben will be back soon, as will John, and the AFCON players will also return. We will survive this period and move on to the next. I am so confident and positive that we will make it.”
