The scandal involving FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino has reached a new level of exposure, with consequences that promise to far exceed the current World Cup. The close connection between Infantino and Donald Trump, highlighted by the recent case of Folarin Balogun, has raised suspicions of direct political interference in the decisions of the highest governing body of world football.
It all started when Donald Trump, with no filter, publicly revealed his influence in the review process of the Balogun case, stating: “Yes, I requested a review from FIFA. I spoke with a man who is highly respected and, by the way, whose level of respect has increased tenfold.” These statements, made by the former president of the United States the morning after a weekend of absolute silence from FIFA, caught Gianni Infantino by surprise and triggered a storm of hasty statements from the organization, which had until then remained reserved about the details of the case.

The episode left the United States Football Federation exposed to ridicule, especially after Trump boasted about his intervention only to see his team suffer a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Belgium. Interestingly, some argue that this setback ultimately benefited FIFA, diverting attention from the scandal that was consuming it and sparing the Belgians from the need to take legal action, a scenario that would have arisen had Balogun been decisive in a U.S. victory.
In the medium and long term, however, Infantino's strategy may have placed world football in a web of legal problems and unnecessary difficulties. FIFA's reluctance to reveal any details of the Balogun case has fueled suspicions of secret proceedings and behind-the-scenes manipulations, which have been readily exploited by the media and rival federations. A source close to the process was emphatic: “There was no reason for this case. It is completely fabricated and Trump is revealing everything.”
FIFA has persistently sought to ensure that its Disciplinary Committee is “independent,” but a high-profile insider dismissed this idea, calling it “one of the biggest falsehoods ever.” The real problem, according to this analysis, is that none of this would have happened without the intervention of the White House — a political interference that, in any other context outside the West, would be immediately condemned.
The consequences have already begun to manifest. Other federations, inspired by the climate of impunity and the mobilizing power of the World Cup, are now considering contesting all decisions. The French federation seeks to have the warning shown to Michael Olise overturned, while the Football Association of the United Kingdom is examining all options regarding the expulsion of Jarell Quansah. In light of this scenario, coach Thomas Tuchel questioned: “Where is this going to end?” — leaving open the suspicion that the current World Cup may just be the beginning of a new era of contestation and instability behind the scenes of world football.
