A fateful error at a crucial point in the match ultimately sealed Coco Gauff's fate in her first-ever semi-final at Wimbledon. The young American, who was looking to make history on the sacred London grass, faltered at the decisive moment against Czech player Karolina Muchova, failing to execute a drop shot when victory seemed within reach.
In the match held this Thursday, July 9, Gauff lost 6-2, 1-6, and 7-6 (10) to Muchova, thus saying goodbye to Wimbledon in the semifinals. It was in the third set, when she had a match point in her favor, that Gauff attempted a drop shot, but the ball fell short of expectations and allowed her opponent to recover. In the end, Gauff did not hide her frustration and took responsibility for the error. “I mean, there’s always someone who says, ‘Why play a drop shot…’ but then I remember how many points I’ve won with drop shots. So, yes, people who don’t watch tennis will ask, ‘Why did you do that?’ But in the end… it was the choice I made. Was it the right decision at that moment? Maybe not. But also, if it had worked, everyone would say it was a classy moment. This is tennis. Points are lost by margins,” the player lamented at the press conference following her defeat.

The American, just 22 years old, was seeking her first title of the season, having not won any tournament since the Wuhan Open in 2025. Her head-to-head record against Muchova is also unfavorable, now tallying six losses to just two victories against the Czech player. “The return of the ball went to a complicated place for me. I didn’t expect it; the bounce caught me by surprise. So, I panicked. But it’s moments like this that serve to learn and have a clearer and more concise plan of what I want to do. At the end of the day, I gave everything I had. I have no regrets. Obviously, there are points where I would have liked to have made better decisions,” Gauff added, visibly disappointed but trying to maintain a positive outlook.
Gauff, who had never reached a final on grass, also emphasized that mistakes like these are part of the journey of any champion, evoking examples of tennis legends. “I look at… Roger lost match points here. Jannik, obviously, at Roland Garros. So, all great champions go through this in their careers. Perhaps this is something that brings me closer to their level,” she said, referring to Federer and Sinner.
Muchova, who has already won titles on grass, took advantage of the momentum and secured her place in the final, where she will face compatriot Linda Noskova. Noskova defeated Marta Kostyuk in the second semifinal, reaching a Grand Slam final for the first time, after never having surpassed the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Gauff's elimination leaves the young player with the need to rethink her approach in moments of greater pressure, but it also reinforces that in tennis, every point can change the course of history. Her journey at Wimbledon promises to serve as a lesson for future battles, in a career that is still far from reaching its peak.
