Novak Djokovic revealed the weight of competing at 39 years old, stating that he feels he is “trapping himself.” The Serbian tennis player, a living legend of the sport, is at a stage where his body is beginning to limit his performance, despite his unwavering passion for the game that has made him one of the greatest figures in tennis.
In an interview with CBS Mornings, Djokovic, holder of 24 Grand Slam titles and over 400 weeks as world number one, confessed: “I often feel like I'm imprisoning myself… To perform at the highest level, you have to transform every aspect of your life off the court to serve tennis. And that has consequences.” The Serbian explained that he tries to focus solely on playing high-level tennis, but age is constantly brought to his attention, whether by people or by his own body. “I try to squeeze the last drop of performance to continue competing at the highest level against younger players,” he added.
In recent days, Djokovic has been involved in various media initiatives to promote his documentary “Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter,” which will be released next month and where he also reveals intimate aspects of his life in Serbia during wartime. Meanwhile, the player participated in Fanatics Fest in Manhattan, where he joined other sports stars ahead of the World Cup final.
In sporting terms, Djokovic continues to challenge the limits of age. Recently, at the Wimbledon tournament, he surpassed Roger Federer's record for most wins at the All England Club (107) and reached the semi-finals after a five-set battle against Felix Auger-Aliassime. However, he ultimately succumbed to Jannik Sinner, who won the match in straight sets and went on to claim the title for the second consecutive time.
Djokovic also explained that the physical toll of the match against Auger-Aliassime prevented him from being in the best condition for the semi-final: “After that match, I couldn't fully recover for the semi-finals. I wasn't as fresh as I would have liked. That doesn't take anything away from Sinner, who won the match and the tournament, but things are different now.” The Serbian is now preparing to participate in the US Open, while Sinner is expected to return to the circuit soon after a short break.
