Diogo Costa, goalkeeper and captain of FC Porto, has raised questions about his future at the club by stating that “it is something I cannot promise.” Although he feels “very happy” at the Dragão, the 26-year-old player acknowledges the uncertainty that surrounds a professional athlete's life, especially after his standout performances at the World Cup for the National Team, which attracted the attention of major European clubs.
In statements to RTP, Diogo Costa emphasized his desire to continue winning trophies with FC Porto, but he made it clear that his stay is not guaranteed. “What I can promise is work and commitment; it has always been that way since I started playing for the first team,” he said, clarifying that his priority is the present and the team's success, particularly with the Super Cup on the horizon.
Regarding the possibility that the Super Cup against Toreense could be his last game for FC Porto, Diogo Costa did not commit. “That question is always 'starter'… I have been associated with leaving this club for some time, but, as I have done so far, what I can say is that I am very happy here,” he added, maintaining a professional and focused demeanor regardless of the speculation.
The captain of FC Porto also declared that his goal is to honor the club's history and raise standards compared to the previous season. “It's another title for our account, and a club like FC Porto lives for that. It's what we want to honor,” he said, reinforcing the squad's ambition. He stressed that a mentality of humility and determination will be crucial for success in this new season, highlighting that “the thought of being back-to-back champions will not cross our minds.”
Regarding his shirt number, despite André Villas-Boas' challenge to take the number 2, Diogo Costa chose to keep 99. “I am extremely grateful to our president for making me that challenge; I feel very honored and proud to see myself as an important person in this club,” he explained. The goalkeeper justified his decision, stating that he wishes to continue his personal journey while respecting the legacy that the number 2 represents, especially in memory of former captain Jorge Costa.
With the Super Cup on the horizon, Diogo Costa and FC Porto are preparing for a crucial challenge, while the goalkeeper's future remains uncertain. His dedication and commitment will be essential for the team's success, regardless of what the future holds for him.
