Bayern Munich beat Magdeburg 6-1 in the DFB-Pokal at the Allianz Arena, even without their leading goalscorer. Harry Kane was given a guard of honour after becoming the first Bayern player to win the Ballon d’Or outside Germany.

The match took place after head coach Vincent Kompany was discharged from hospital, a relief for the team.

Kompany recovers at home

Kompany, who had collapsed during a training session the previous week, left hospital just five days after the incident. Max Eberl, Bayern’s sporting director, confirmed that the Belgian coach was dealing with meningeal irritation, but he was optimistic about his recovery.

Eberl said: “He must rest, but I am very, very confident that he will be back on the bench 100% very soon.” In the meantime, Aaron Danks has taken charge of the team.

Olise and Karl shine

Bayern scored early, with Michael Olise opening the scoring after 10 minutes. The visitors’ Mateusz Zukowski levelled the match. Olise shone again by setting up Ismael Saibari for the second goal and, shortly afterwards, converted a penalty to make it 3-1.

Young Lennart Karl played a key role, assisting goals by Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown. David Santos Daiber wrapped up the scoring in stoppage time.

Nathaniel Brown said the win was also dedicated to Kompany: “We are winning for him, of course. It’s really good that he is back home now. He must rest, but we hope to see him again soon.”

Danks, who remains in charge of the team, reiterated that Kompany needs to focus on his recovery as the team prepares for the challenges ahead.

Other results in Europe

In other DFB-Pokal matches, Bayer Leverkusen staged a comeback to beat Nuremberg 5-2, and Stuttgart beat Paderborn 1-0. The biggest surprise of the day came in Poland, where reigning champions Lech Poznan were knocked out 1-0 by fourth-division club Siarka Tarnobrzeg.

In Serie A, Inter Milan returned to the top of the table after beating bottom side Venezia 2-0. Milan suffered their first home defeat of the season, 4-2 against Bologna, ahead of the Milan derby.

Juventus’s situation remains difficult after a 2-0 defeat by Genoa, while Napoli, who beat Monza, climbed to sixth place.
