Chinese state broadcaster China Media Group (CMG) has rejected Real Madrid’s apology over Kylian Mbappé’s comments about a meme featuring Mao Zedong. Tension between the club and China has increased and turned into a commercial and diplomatic concern.

According to Mundo Deportivo, CMG rejected the explanations offered by Real Madrid and insisted that the club must also take responsibility for its player’s statements.

The controversy began when Mbappé mentioned his favourite meme in an interview, referring to an image that superimposed his face on that of Mao Zedong, the former leader of China.

CMG suspends La Liga and removes content

As a result, CMG suspended its coverage of La Liga, including Mbappé’s matches, and withdrew promotional content involving the player. The organisation said Mbappé’s comments had overstepped the limits of freedom of expression and demanded a proper apology from Real Madrid.

“Until Real Madrid offers an appropriate apology, there is nothing to discuss,” the broadcaster warned.

Club statement and commercial losses

Following the criticism, Real Madrid issued an official statement apologising for the discomfort caused by Mbappé’s words. The club expressed its respect for China’s history, culture and people, and backed the apology already given by the player.

CMG confirmed it had received the club’s letter of apology via La Liga, but did not make clear whether the suspended coverage will resume.

Meanwhile, three Chinese companies have already terminated their commercial agreements with Mbappé. Real Madrid, who hold a percentage of the player’s image rights, could lose significant revenue. The decision to apologise shows an intention to protect relations with China, but the situation remains unresolved.

The official apology is expected to help calm tempers, but uncertainty remains. The club are now trying to limit the damage and restore their image while awaiting developments in the case.
