Liverpool and Manchester City have secured their places in the next round of the League Cup, both after dramatic penalty shootouts.
Liverpool, after a 1-1 draw with Chelsea, won 6-5 on penalties. Manchester City got past Brighton & Hove Albion, also on penalties, by 4-3.
Liverpool hold firm at Anfield
At Anfield, the meeting between Liverpool and Chelsea was marked by intense pressure. Joe Gomez, known for never having scored a goal for his team, converted a decisive penalty that put Liverpool in front.
“Fofana gave Liverpool an opportunity with a missed penalty, and that was crucial,” said one commentator, highlighting the moment of tension. Liverpool showed nerves of steel, with their players converting penalties under pressure, while Chelsea suffered some misses that compromised their progress in the competition.
Rulli and Maresca at the Etihad
At the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City put in a solid performance, but not without some scares. Goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli was key, making important saves that secured City’s victory.
Brighton captain Lewis Dunk missed a penalty under intense pressure, which ended up sealing his side’s fate. City head coach Enzo Maresca praised the resilience of his players: “We stayed calm and showed our character when it mattered.”
Other results from the round
Other teams also shone during the round. AFC Bournemouth beat Aston Villa 3-0, while Crystal Palace booked their place in the next round by beating Fulham 1-0 with a single goal.
Sunderland continued their good form, beating Brentford 3-2.
With these wins, Liverpool and Manchester City join Bournemouth, Sunderland and Crystal Palace in the draw for the next round of the competition. The pressure is mounting, with the expectation that these teams will stay in good form as they prepare for the next challenges.
