Tottenham shook the transfer market by securing the signing of Sandro Tonali, a midfielder from Newcastle, for a fee that could reach £100 million – a new record for the London club. This high-profile transfer clearly reinforces the Spurs' ambition, as they invest heavily once again to compete for top positions.
Tonali, 26, arrives in London after three seasons with Newcastle. Tottenham saw an initial offer of around £80 million rejected by the Magpies but ultimately reached an agreement for an initial fee of £92.5 million, which could increase by an additional £7.5 million in add-ons. The Italian international thus becomes the most expensive signing in Spurs' history and joins fellow new signing Mateus Fernandes, who was acquired from West Ham for £85 million.
The Italian midfielder joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023, in a transfer that cost £55 million. However, shortly after his arrival, he was suspended by the Italian Football Federation for 10 months for violating betting rules. Despite this setback, Tonali made a strong comeback and played a key role in Newcastle's victory in the EFL Cup (Carabao Cup) in 2025, ending a 70-year trophy drought.
The Spurs' coach, Roberto de Zerbi, had already identified Tonali as a target during his time at Sassuolo, when the midfielder was shining in Serie A. Now, finally together in London, the Italian manager sees a long-held desire come to fruition, betting heavily on the quality of his compatriot to strengthen the team's midfield.
This summer has been marked by a genuine revolution in Tottenham's squad. In addition to the expensive signings of Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, defenders Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi arrived on free transfers. The club's total investment could rise to £237 million, including the potential signing of centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke.
Tonali's arrival promises to elevate the level of the Spurs' midfield, clearly demonstrating the club's commitment to returning to winning titles and establishing itself among the elite of English football. It remains to be seen how the Italian midfielder will adapt to this new reality and live up to the high expectations surrounding his signing.
