Sandro Tonali has officially become the most expensive Italian player ever after signing with Tottenham Hotspur in a transfer that exceeds 100 million euros, leaving the football world in shock. The 26-year-old Italian international departs Newcastle after three seasons to strengthen the Spurs' midfield, marking one of the most significant moves of this transfer window.

Tottenham confirmed the signing of the midfielder on Monday, following several weeks of rumors about a deal worth 115 million euros with Newcastle. This amount surpasses the previous record held by Mateo Retegui, who was transferred from Atalanta to Al Qadsiah for 68 million euros a year ago. Tonali arrives in London after a remarkable stint in both English and Italian football, bringing with him titles and international experience. During his three seasons with Newcastle, Tonali made 110 appearances, scored ten goals, and provided ten assists, having won the English League Cup (Carabao Cup) in 2025.

The official statement from Tottenham highlights the profile of the new signing: “A tenacious, creative, and energetic figure in midfield, Sandro joins us from Newcastle, where he became one of the most consistent players in the Premier League.” The London club also recalls the Italian's journey, from his early steps at Lombardia Uno and Piacenza, through Brescia – where he established himself and was named Serie B Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons – to AC Milan, where he won the Scudetto in the 2021/22 season and made his mark in the Champions League.

In relation to his international career, Tottenham emphasizes: “He represented Italy at the Under-19 European Championship in 2018 and at the Under-21 European Championship in 2019, making his debut for the senior national team in October 2019. To date, he has 32 caps and four goals.” The statement concludes with enthusiastic welcomes: “Welcome, Sandro!”

Newcastle also officially announced Tonali's departure, highlighting that it is the second largest sale in the club's history. “The transfer fee represents the second highest amount ever received by Newcastle United,” reads the official website of the northern England club. “Sandro leaves St. James’ Park after 110 appearances and ten goals in all competitions. The 26-year-old midfielder, who joined from AC Milan in the summer of 2023, departs after winning the Carabao Cup and being an influential player last season, including 11 matches in the Champions League.” The club also thanked the Italian international for his contributions: “Everyone at Newcastle United thanks Sandro for his dedication to the club and wishes him, as well as his family, all the best for the future.”

With this transfer, Tonali inscribes his name in the history of Italian and English football, strengthening an ambitious Tottenham that is heavily investing in midfield. The impact of this signing promises to shake up the Premier League and raise the expectations of London fans for the upcoming season. As for Newcastle, the loss of one of their key figures now requires a reconfiguration of the squad to address the departure of the Italian international.
