Arne Slot is being touted as a strong candidate for the position of head coach of the Netherlands national team, in a surprising turn of events following his departure from Liverpool. The 47-year-old Dutch coach is in negotiations with the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) to take over the national team, sources reported on Monday.
Slot was dismissed from Liverpool in June after a disappointing 2025-26 season, despite having secured qualification for the Champions League “by a whisker.” The coach, who had won the Premier League in his first season with the Reds, found himself removed after failing to meet the high expectations at Anfield.
According to Florian Plettenberg, a journalist with Sky Sports, Slot is on the KNVB's shortlist to succeed Ronald Koeman, who resigned after a disastrous campaign at the FIFA World Cup. The Netherlands were eliminated in the round of 16 after being defeated by Morocco in a penalty shootout. Plettenberg also revealed that initial talks between Slot and the federation have already taken place, although other names are still under consideration.
Among the other candidates is Erik ten Hag, currently the technical director of FC Twente, whose potential appointment was also mentioned by transfer specialist Nicolo Schira in early July.
With a coaching career that began at Cambuur Leeuwarden in 2016, Arne Slot took over at AZ in 2019 before moving to Feyenoord in 2021. Slot's time in Rotterdam was marked by success, winning the Eredivisie in 2023 and the KNVB Cup in 2024, in addition to reaching the UEFA Conference League final in 2022.
The possibility of Slot taking charge of the national team has reignited interest in the future of the Netherlands, following a disappointing showing at the World Cup. Negotiations are ongoing, with the Dutch federation evaluating all options to ensure a new direction for the Oranje team.
