Jürgen Klopp surprised many by revealing details of the conversation he had with Rudi Völler, at a time when his name is emerging as the main candidate to succeed Julian Nagelsmann as head coach of the German national team. This revelation comes on the same day it was confirmed that Rudi Völler will remain as sporting director of Germany until at least the end of his contract in 2028, despite the team's early elimination from the World Cup against Paraguay in the Round of 16.

The decision to keep Völler in his position was made following discussions between him and Jürgen Klopp, the former Liverpool manager, who is widely regarded as the favorite to succeed Nagelsmann. On Tuesday night, while serving as a sports commentator for MagentaTV, Klopp explained the reasons that led him to speak directly with Völler: “The situation is really unusual because nothing is decided yet. But still, some conversations can happen regardless of how things turn out. And when I read that people were wondering if Rudi Völler could work with me if the situation arose, I thought it was important to speak directly with him and clarify that this would not be a problem from my side,” Klopp stated.

The German coach also emphasized the value of Völler's experience, highlighting the importance of having someone deeply knowledgeable about the intricacies of the German Football Association if he were to take over the leadership of the national team. “If it happens, it would be helpful to have someone who knows the processes and everything involved. Rudi, on one hand, has his football experience and, on the other, many years of work within the federation – something I wouldn’t have any experience in if I became the national coach. I have never played for the national team nor have I ever coached it,” Klopp explained, thus reinforcing the need for institutional support in the event of a transition.

The confirmation of Völler's continuation until 2028, even after a disappointing World Cup, brings a new dynamic to the future of the German national team and the possible integration of Klopp as coach. Klopp's own statements demonstrate openness to dialogue and a clear willingness to dispel any doubts about compatibility or internal conflicts should he be appointed.

With the focus now on the decisions of the German Football Association and ongoing negotiations, anticipation grows around the outcome of this potential partnership between two of the most influential figures in German football. The future of the national team could be on the brink of entering a new era, depending on the choices that lie ahead.
