Karolina Muchova secured a place in the Wimbledon semi-finals by defeating Naomi Osaka 7-6 (4), 6-4, becoming, at 29 years old, one of the top contenders for the tournament title. The Czech player, who had never reached this stage at Wimbledon before, capitalized on Osaka's drop in performance, who had come off a surprising victory over world number one Aryna Sabalenka, to achieve a historic milestone in her career.

The clash between Muchova and Osaka was highly anticipated after the Japanese player eliminated the top favorite. However, Osaka was unable to replicate her previous performance, and Muchova, a finalist at Roland Garros, imposed her complete game, demonstrating superiority in all aspects. She is now set to face Coco Gauff in the semi-finals. Despite Gauff leading their head-to-head record 6-1, the Czech player won their last encounter earlier this year in three sets on the clay courts of Stuttgart.

Greg Rusedski, former British number one, praised Muchova in the latest episode of the Off Court podcast. “I know her game well. I know her coach, Sven Groeneveld, very well, who was my best man and trained me for four years, and he has done a fabulous job with her,” Rusedski stated. The former tennis player added: “She is confident. We thought she would have a great performance at Roland Garros, and let’s not forget, she didn’t win the warm-up tournament before this Grand Slam. She is in excellent form. Beating Osaka, especially after the way Osaka defeated Sabalenka, was impressive, and to do it in straight sets.”

Rusedski also highlighted: “From my point of view, this is a difficult match to predict. Osaka was my pick after the last few matches, but Muchova is the most complete player on the WTA tour; she has no weaknesses. And her mentality is starting to show. She must be thinking to herself: ‘This is a wonderful opportunity to be back in a Grand Slam final.’” The Brit also reminded that Wimbledon is the “Holy Grail” of tennis, but left open whether Muchova's dream will end with the much-desired trophy.

Statistically, Muchova ranks 58th in the world for the percentage of points won on the first serve, 74th in games won on return, 12th in service games won, and 22nd in aces, which shows consistency in various aspects of the game. The fact that she is competent with both strokes, comfortable at the net and in transition, skilled with the slice, and seemingly able to execute all shots with ease reinforces Rusedski's opinion on her versatility.

With her arrival in the semi-finals at Wimbledon, Muchova now has reached this stage in all four Grand Slams and can legitimately dream of her first major title. The next challenge, against Gauff, promises to be balanced, with Rusedski considering it a 50/50 duel, and the Czech player believing this could be her big opportunity.
