Official jerseys of the Norwegian national football team have disappeared from shelves at an impressive speed, leaving fans ecstatic and retailers struggling to keep up with such demand ahead of the highly anticipated quarter-final clash against England in the 2026 World Cup, which takes place this Saturday night at 10:00 PM. The phenomenon has reached unprecedented proportions, with the Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) admitting it severely underestimated fan interest, unable to keep pace with the frantic orders since the launch of the kits in March.
The global enthusiasm surrounding Erling Haaland and the other stars of the team, particularly fueled by Norway's recent 2-1 victory over Brazil, has led to genuine crowds in both physical and online stores. The NFF's commercial director, Runar Pahr Andresen, revealed to Norwegian broadcaster TV2 that “the demand from fans has exceeded all forecasts,” highlighting that orders have reached an all-time record this year. The situation became so chaotic that some determined fans decided to camp overnight to secure the coveted jersey.
The atmosphere of madness was clearly evident in Oslo, at the Torshov Sport store, where the arrival of a new batch of jerseys on Tuesday triggered queues that, by Wednesday morning, snaked around 600 meters, crossing several blocks. Some of the most fervent fans brought chairs and endured waits of up to 12 hours to not miss the chance to acquire the trendy gear. Anders Lilleberg, the store manager, described to the Norwegian newspaper VG: “I have been here for many years, but I have never encountered the kind of atmosphere that exists now. It is absolutely wild.”
The NFF confirmed that this year's order reached an impressive total of 250,000 pieces of equipment, a true record compared to the approximately 50,000 sold in the same period last year. The same federation official, Runar Pahr Andresen, did not hide the scale of the commercial phenomenon: “The federation has never made as much money from jersey sales as it does now.”
Nike, the partner in producing the equipment, responded to the surge in demand through a spokesperson who, in statements to the BBC, acknowledged the “disappointment” among fans and assured that the company “is working to improve availability.” New deliveries of jerseys are expected in Norway in the coming days, along with “broader availability later on.”
