A FIFA is set to announce a historic revenue of $15 billion from the World Cup, significantly exceeding initial forecasts. This amount, equivalent to around £11.2 billion, represents a substantial increase from the $11 billion projected before the tournament began.
The information was communicated to FIFA member associations by President Gianni Infantino on Saturday. Sources close to the organization indicate that the increase in revenue is primarily due to the secondary ticket market and high-priced hospitality packages. FIFA charges 15% to both the buyer and the seller on secondary market transactions, which contributes to this significant growth in profits.
This financial growth comes at a delicate time for Infantino, who has faced recent criticism in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The controversial decision to rescind the red card given to American forward Folarin Balogun after the match against Paraguay in the Round of 16 sparked protests, particularly among European federations. Despite this, the FIFA president has already received over 200 formal endorsements from associations for his re-election bid scheduled for March, and the substantial increase in World Cup revenues could help silence any potential dissent.
In addition to the immediate financial impact, this result could boost the United States' bid to host another World Cup in the future. Donald Trump, at an event held on Friday, emphasized the country's desire to host the tournament again, stating: “They should choose the United States of America again. This time, we will leave Canada and Mexico out.” The country is also in negotiations with FIFA to host the Club World Cup in 2029.
Interestingly, as of Saturday night, VIP and hospitality packages were still available for the final between Spain and Argentina, which will take place in New Jersey, with prices reaching up to $34,500 per person for access to the “trophy lounge.”
