Iga Swiatek claimed her first title of the season by defeating Elena Rybakina in the final of the Canadian Open, held in Toronto, with a convincing score of 6-2, 6-3. This victory not only marks the Polish player's return to the podium after a ten-month hiatus but also has significant implications in the race for the top positions in the WTA rankings.

During the match, Swiatek was dominant from the outset, breaking Rybakina's serve in the very first game and consolidating her lead to go up 2-0. The Polish player quickly established her rhythm, putting pressure on her opponent and forcing her into uncomfortable positions. Although Rybakina managed to create a few break opportunities, Swiatek remained calm and did not allow the Russian to re-enter the match. With a superior performance, the six-time Grand Slam champion took the first set with a clear 6-2.

In the second set, Rybakina raised her level, making the match more competitive, especially regarding serve. Both players began to find more consistency, but it was Swiatek who seized the first significant opportunity, breaking her opponent's serve in the fifth game. The Polish player, known for her ability to maintain leads, controlled the match even when Rybakina attempted to mount a comeback, sealing the victory with another break, finishing the set at 6-3.

With this win, Swiatek now has 12 WTA 1000 titles, positioning herself among the top five players of all time, just behind legends like Serena Williams and Martina Hingis. This triumph also propels her to 10th place in the WTA race, reigniting her aspirations for the WTA Finals, although she is still over 700 points behind the top eight.

On the other hand, Rybakina missed a valuable opportunity to close in on the top of the rankings. With the defeat, the Russian now finds herself over 450 points behind Aryna Sabalenka, who holds the number one position. Rybakina will have a new chance at the Cincinnati Open, where she will need a strong performance to regain ground in the race for the world number one.
