Cristian Romero expressed his joy following his transfer to Atlético de Madrid, stating that he is “delighted” to join a “great club.” The Argentine defender left Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £34 million, a move that allows Spurs to reinvest in defensive reinforcements. Romero, who spent five years in London, now relocates to the Spanish capital with the ambition of winning titles with a team that finished fourth in the last edition of La Liga.

In his statement about the transfer, Romero emphasized his determination to leave his mark on the club's history. “I am very happy, very delighted to be here, at this great club. I know that I come with the same mentality as always, trying to write my name in the history of this beautiful club. The only way is to win trophies, so I come with that mentality and I will give everything until the last day to achieve it,” said the defender.

Romero also highlighted that Atlético's style of play suits him perfectly. “When I played against them in the Champions League, the fans supporting… all of that made me decide to come here. I will give my absolute best, without a doubt. In the end, football can go well or badly, but I know I will be 100% committed to this badge, this shirt,” he added.

The defender will reunite with coach Diego Simeone, a compatriot and long-time admirer of Romero. “I speak from the perspective of a fan of Argentina. I admire his personality, his character, his defensive work, and his skill with the ball,” Simeone previously said.

With Romero's departure, Tottenham now faces an additional challenge, as Pedro Porro and Micky Van de Ven are being considered as potential new team captains. With the start of the Premier League season approaching, the team led by Roberto De Zerbi needs to act quickly to establish strong leadership, thus avoiding an unstable start.
