The Surf World Championship is about to kick off in Australia, and the anticipation is palpable! The new season of the World Surf League (WSL) promises to be electrifying, with significant changes to the competitive format and the return of big names, alongside the historic debut of Portuguese athletes who will make history in the Championship Tour (CT). It is a decisive moment for national surfing, which is on the rise.
Two Portuguese surfers, Yolanda Hopkins and Francisca Veselko, will represent our country for the first time in the women’s CT. Both athletes shone in the Challenger Series (CS), with Yolanda securing an impressive second place and Francisca finishing fifth. This achievement not only earned them a spot among the best in the world but also one of the scarce seven spots available for women in the elite of surfing, which will be contested in 2026.
Hopkins’ statements reflect the excitement of this moment: “It’s a dream come true. Surfing is my life and representing Portugal at this level is an indescribable honor.” On the other hand, Veselko did not hide her joy: “The hard work paid off. I’m ready to compete and show what I can do.”
In addition to the Portuguese duo, five other athletes have qualified, with young French prodigy Tya Zebrowski standing out. At just 15 years old, Tya made history by winning the CS, becoming the youngest surfer to secure a spot in the CT. Veterans Sally Fitzgibbons, Alyssa Spencer, Nadia Erostarbe, and Anat Lelior complete the list of qualifiers, promising to intensify the competition.
On the men’s side, Australians dominated the scene, with five of the ten spots filled by surfers from the land of kangaroos. Frenchman Kauli Vaast, who made a name for himself by winning the Olympic gold medal in Paris 2024, also qualified, marking his first appearance on the CT. Joining him are seasoned surfers Morgan Cibilic, George Pittar, Callum Robson, Liam O’Brien, and Oscar Berry, along with other talents such as Brazilians Samuel Pupo and Mateus Herdy, Hawaiian Eli Hanneman, and South African Luke Thompson.
With so much talent on display, the Surfing World Championship promises to be an unmissable spectacle. Expectations are high, not only for the new talents and triumphant returns but also for the established stars who are set to shine again on the main stage. Get ready to ride waves of excitement and fierce competition!
