The humiliating defeat of the Tottenham Hotspur, by 5-2, in the Champions League against Atlético de Madrid, left an indelible mark on young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. After a disastrous performance in the first half, where he conceded two goals to the opponent in just 15 minutes, Kinsky’s future in London seems uncertain, with rumors suggesting that the player is seeking an exit next summer.
The surprising decision by Igor Tudor to promote Kinsky to the starting lineup for this crucial match came after a difficult spell for regular goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. However, the initiative quickly turned into a nightmare. During the first 17 minutes of the game, Kinsky became the target of fans’ frustration, failing at critical moments that allowed Antoine Griezmann and Julián Alvarez to score. The situation deteriorated to the point where Tudor did not hesitate to substitute Kinsky for Vicario before the end of the first half, leaving the young goalkeeper without any support or words of comfort.
The press, particularly The Telegraph, reports that Kinsky has been seeking a loan move during the last two transfer windows, without success. The 22-year-old player, who joined the Spurs from Slavia Praha in January 2025 as an emergency solution, saw his rising career abruptly halted following Vicario’s return to form. Kinsky’s prospects of defending Tottenham’s goal again appear bleak, especially after such a disastrous night.
Kinsky’s teammates are in shock over Tudor’s decision, which he has not seemed able to justify. “It was, before the game, the right choice, given the pressure on Vicario in another competition,” Tudor stated, attempting to defend his decision. “Tony is a very good goalkeeper. After this, of course, it’s easy to say it wasn’t the right choice. I spoke with him, and he understands the moment, understands why he was taken out. As I said, he is a good goalkeeper, and we are together; it’s never about just one player.”
The situation at Tottenham is critical, with this defeat marking the sixth consecutive loss, an unprecedented feat in the club’s 143-year history. “It was too much for us at this moment when we are fragile, when we are weak,” Tudor lamented. “I recognize what we are and what problems we have. It’s hard to explain what happens on the field.”
The defeat did not go unnoticed by figures in the football world. Antoine Griezmann, who had a devastating individual performance, said: “It’s a shame. If the coach – the current one or another – starts with this goalkeeper, he has to stick with his decision until the end. For the goalkeeper, it must be mentally very difficult.” Support for Kinsky also came from David de Gea, the former goalkeeper of Manchester United, who expressed solidarity during the halftime break, highlighting the unique challenges faced by players in that position.
As Tottenham finds itself mired in an identity crisis, the repercussions of Kinsky’s humiliation may be felt far beyond the pitch. With the pressure mounting and the future of the young goalkeeper at stake, the question remains: will Kinsky be able to recover from the setback and find a new path outside of Tottenham? The answer could very well define his career in the coming years.
