Liverpool stumbles again in the FA Cup as Arne Slot explodes over “recurring themes” that continue to condemn the team
In yet another painful chapter of the season, Liverpool was humiliatingly eliminated from the FA Cup, losing 4-0 to Manchester City at Eastlands. Coach Arne Slot did not hide his frustration and highlighted issues that seem deeply rooted in the team, particularly in a defense that inexplicably faltered once more.
The game appeared balanced in the first 38 minutes, with Liverpool managing to contain the fierce attack of City and even creating clear opportunities, including a glaring chance for Mohamed Salah, who ultimately failed after hesitating too much. However, what followed was a brutal demonstration of the Reds’ defensive fragility.
Erling Haaland was the executioner: he scored two goals before halftime and completed his hat-trick in the second half, solidifying City’s victory and their progression to the semi-finals. Antoine Semenyo also joined the celebration, scoring the third goal for the hosts. To complete the bleak scenario, Salah missed a penalty that could have given hope to the team.
After the final whistle, Arne Slot did not hide his anger. “We are disappointed with the result, disappointed to be out of the competition and very disappointed with the 20 minutes in which we conceded four goals,” he revealed to BBC Sport. “The way we defended during that period was unacceptable. With that kind of defensive performance, you never win a game.”
Slot tried to find some positives, acknowledging that the team did some good things, especially in controlling the game and creating opportunities. “I liked many things I saw today, we controlled the game both in and out of possession, created good chances, and managed to keep City away from danger for a long time. Until the penalty moment, there was a lot to like.”
But the Dutch coach had no doubts in pointing out the structural problems that continue to plague Liverpool. “There are themes that keep repeating: we miss our opportunities and, although we usually concede few goals, the few we do concede end up being fatal. We urgently need to improve our defense inside the box, something that was clear today.”
Slot also mentioned that, despite the 2-0 being a difficult result, there was still hope for a comeback. But a catastrophic 10-minute period in the second half destroyed all possibilities of a reaction. “Those 10 minutes were the worst of the game. That’s when we conceded two goals that killed the game. We need to improve a lot in those high-pressure phases.”
This defeat not only eliminates Liverpool from the FA Cup but also raises a red flag for the upcoming challenges of the season. Arne Slot’s team needs to fix the defense and start converting the chances created into goals to prevent these “recurring issues” from continuing to ruin the Reds’ season.
