Arne Slot, the coach of Feyenoord, expressed his frustration with Liverpool’s lack of effectiveness following their 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. The match, held at the RAMS Stadium in Istanbul, saw Liverpool punished by a header from Mario Lemina early in the first half. The home team delivered a dominant performance, creating several opportunities to extend their lead before the break, while the Reds struggled with their finishing.

After the interval, Liverpool appeared to have regained their form, but a goal from Ibrahima Konaté was disallowed for a supposed handball, a decision that left Slot perplexed. Mohamed Salah, who failed to shine in the match, was substituted after an hour, marking his 81st appearance in the Champions League, a club record.

“We started the game really well,” said Slot. “We had three or four excellent moments. The biggest one was when Florian (Wirtz) had almost an open goal but couldn’t finish.” The coach added that despite creating good chances, Liverpool failed to score, and with Galatasaray’s first attack resulting in a corner, he praised the opponent’s effectiveness: “They played as if it was the last opportunity of their lives.”

Slot emphasized that the team needs to learn from Galatasaray’s mentality, which took advantage of the first chance it had. “Sometimes, we have our opportunities and it seems like we think we’re going to have ten more,” he said, referring to his own team’s lack of urgency. “It’s already difficult to come here, but when we’re losing 1-0, it becomes even more complicated.”

At this moment, Liverpool sits in sixth place in the Premier League and is seeking redemption in a turbulent season through the Champions League. However, erratic performances continue to be a recurring theme. Slot also complained about the VAR decision that disallowed Konaté’s goal, stating that “it is not possible for so many things to go against us” in their visits to Galatasaray, where they had also lost in the group stage of this season.

The coach hinted that the vibrant atmosphere created by Galatasaray’s fans could have influenced referee Jesús Gil Manzano. “It’s always very difficult to talk to referees in situations like this, as they are in communication with VAR and have to listen to what is being said,” Slot explained. He questioned the decision to disallow the goal, acknowledging that opinions varied, but insisted that the foul on Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk during the corner that led to the incident was worthy of a penalty. “Look at how much they pulled Virgil’s shirt before the ball hit Ibou’s arm; it’s safe to say we weren’t the only ones impressed by the atmosphere here today.”

Slot concluded with a criticism of the unequal treatment of fouls in the Premier League and the Champions League: “In the Premier League, much more is allowed than in the Champions League. I was really surprised that a penalty was not awarded, especially when in other situations the referee was so quick to blow the whistle against us.” The tension continues to rise for Liverpool, who now face a monumental challenge to advance in the European competition.
