Arsenal have decisively stepped back from securing Malick Fofana’s signature, paving the way for Sunderland to swoop in on Deadline Day. The Lyon winger, a 21-year-old Belgian talent, had piqued Arsenal’s interest as the club remained open to bolstering their attacking options before the summer transfer window slammed shut on Tuesday night.
Despite being offered to the Gunners and engaging in preliminary talks, Arsenal never fully committed to closing the deal for Fofana. Mikel Arteta reportedly held a direct conversation with the winger, exploring the potential move, but the negotiations stalled over financial terms. Lyon’s valuation of approximately £30-35 million proved a stumbling block Arsenal was unwilling to overcome.
While Fofana expressed eagerness to join Arsenal, the club’s firm stance on player valuations this transfer window has led them to pass on several key targets, including this promising youngster. Sunderland capitalised on Arsenal’s hesitation and are now set to finalize the transfer, with Fofana scheduled for a medical ahead of his move.
This development underlines Arsenal’s rigid transfer policy this summer, prioritising fiscal discipline even at the expense of missing out on promising signings. The decision not to meet Lyon’s asking price for Fofana signals that the Gunners remain cautious in their pursuit of reinforcements, despite ongoing interest in strengthening their squad depth on the wings.
