Arsene Wenger backs France to win World Cup but warns Spain pose biggest threat

Arsene Wenger backs France to win World Cup but warns Spain pose biggest threat

Arsene Wenger Delivers Bold World Cup Prediction: Only Spain Can Halt France’s Reign

French football icon Arsene Wenger has made a striking proclamation ahead of the World Cup, asserting that only Spain stands between France and global glory. The former Arsenal manager and current FIFA Chief of Global Football Development expressed unwavering confidence in Didier Deschamps’ squad, dismissing England and Argentina as significant threats to Les Bleus’ title ambitions.

Wenger pointed directly to Spain as the sole nation capable of derailing France’s march toward the trophy. “France will win the World Cup,” Wenger declared in an interview with Sky Sports, anticipating the inevitable skepticism about his national allegiance. “I know you will say, 'of course you say that, you’re French.'”

France, the 2018 World Cup champions, were narrowly beaten by Argentina in the last edition’s final. Now, with the tournament’s climax approaching, Wenger is adamant that the key challenge comes from the reigning European champions, Spain. He highlighted Spain’s superior technical prowess, a quality he believes outshines even the formidable physicality of the French squad. “The real question for me is Spain. If one team is capable now of beating France I would say it is Spain because their technical level is better than France,” Wenger stated.

Wenger cited recent history to substantiate his claim. Spain have triumphed over France in their past two encounters, outlasting Deschamps’ team 5-4 in the Nations League semi-final and edging them 2-1 in the Euro 2024 semi-final. According to Wenger, Spain’s “quality and a culture of collective football that nobody else in the world has at that level” makes them a unique opponent. “That could be the decider between these two but of course France is stronger physically,” he added.

Current tournament dynamics place France and Spain on a collision course for another high-stakes showdown in the semi-finals. France must first overcome Morocco, while Spain faces a formidable Belgian side. Meanwhile, England and Argentina are positioned on the opposite side of the draw, with the Three Lions set to battle Norway and Argentina preparing to meet Switzerland.

Despite the competitive field, Wenger’s forecast is crystal clear: France are the team to beat, but only Spain—armed with their technical brilliance and recent head-to-head superiority—can truly threaten Les Bleus’ quest for another world title.
