Belgium confirm departure of head coach Rudi Garcia after 2026 World Cup exit

Belgium confirm departure of head coach Rudi Garcia after 2026 World Cup exit

Rudi Garcia’s tenure as Belgium’s head coach has come to an abrupt end, with the Royal Belgian Football Association confirming that the Frenchman’s contract will not be renewed following the 2026 World Cup. Garcia, who led the Red Devils for 18 months, departs after guiding the team to the quarter-finals in a campaign marked by drama, controversy, and unfulfilled expectations.

Belgium’s World Cup journey under Garcia was anything but smooth. The Red Devils progressed from their group as leaders, but their performances raised eyebrows, with lacklustre draws against Egypt and Iran sparking criticism. The team’s resilience was put to the test in the last 32 against Senegal, where they staged a miraculous comeback from two goals down, ultimately prevailing 3-2 in extra time to avoid an early exit.

Further adversity awaited as Belgium overcame the fallout from the Folarin Balogun saga to eliminate co-hosts USA, but their campaign ultimately unravelled in the quarter-finals. A costly late error by substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens handed victory to eventual champions Spain, ending Belgium’s hopes of going further.

Despite steering the team to the last eight, Garcia’s future remained uncertain amid widespread doubts about the Red Devils’ performances. The 62-year-old confirmed his departure in an official statement: “After discussions with the RBFA, we have decided not to extend the excellent journey we have shared over the past 18 months,” Garcia stated. “I leave Belgium in League A of the UEFA Nations League and among the top eight teams in the world. I would like to thank my outstanding group of players, sports director Vincent Mannaert, and the fans who supported us throughout this World Cup. I wish Belgium every success as they continue the generational transition that I was proud to help initiate.”

Belgium’s sports director Vincent Mannaert also paid tribute to Garcia’s impact during a turbulent period for the national team. “Rudi Garcia has unquestionably played a key role in restoring the Belgian Red Devils. He was appointed national coach in a challenging sporting and financial context. Thanks in particular to his commitment and experience, team cohesion was restored and a strong result was achieved at the most recent FIFA World Cup. On behalf of the federation, I would like to warmly thank Rudi and his assistants for the past 18 months. Together with my team, I am currently preparing for a new cycle, including the appointment of a new national coach.”

As Belgium prepares for a new era, the search is now underway for a successor capable of steering the Red Devils through their ongoing generational transition.
