Birmingham City discovers the player that Ferguson called the “best finisher.”

Birmingham City, under the leadership of Lee Clark, former player of Newcastle United and Sunderland, experienced a moment of hope in the 2012/13 season, finishing in 12th place in the Championship table. With the intention of building on that foundation, Clark brought several additions to the squad during the summer transfer window, including goalkeeper Darren Randolph and forward Lee Novak, both on free transfers, as well as loans for Dan Burn from Fulham and Jesse Lingard from Manchester United. The team, which already featured talents such as Nikola Zigic and Demarai Gray, appeared ready for a promising season. However, reality proved to be quite different.

With just three wins in the first 13 league games, it became clear that the departures of key players like Jack Butland and Nathan Redmond were having a greater impact than expected. As January approached, new reinforcements became an urgent necessity. The impressive performance of Jesse Lingard, who scored six goals and provided three assists in 13 matches, led Birmingham to seek more loans from the Red Devils. Thus, Tom Thorpe, Tyler Blackett, and Federico Macheda joined the club in the winter transfer window.

Macheda, an Italian forward who made a name for himself in the youth ranks of Manchester United, made a stunning debut in the Premier League by scoring a decisive goal against Aston Villa, a moment that catapulted him to fame. However, his trajectory since then has been marked by loans to various clubs without managing to maintain the level he displayed in his first major opportunity. After stints with Sampdoria, Queens Park Rangers, and Stuttgart, the young Italian found himself at St Andrews for the second half of the 2013/14 season.

His arrival in Birmingham started off strong, as he scored in his debut as a substitute in a 3-3 draw against Derby County, followed by a stellar performance where he netted two goals in a 2-0 victory over Charlton. Macheda quickly established himself as a key player in the team, fiercely competing with other forwards like Peter Lovenkrands and Nikola Zigic. However, after a brief goal drought, he shone again by scoring a hat-trick against Burnley and continued to find the net in subsequent matches, totaling ten goals and one assist in 18 appearances.

Despite his performance in Birmingham, the truth is that Macheda never managed to live up to the expectations created after his debut. In an interview with SunSport, he reflected: “Sir Alex told everyone that I was the best finisher at the club. I was surprised. It was the best team in the history of Manchester United, with names and quality. He must have some special feeling for me and certainly hoped things would be different for me.” The pressure and expectations that accumulated on him from the beginning turned his career into a rollercoaster.

After the end of his contract with United, Macheda moved to Cardiff City in 2014, where he stayed for two years before returning to Italy with Novara. His career continued with stints at clubs in Greece, Turkey, and Cyprus, proving that despite the difficulties and frustration of not living up to the potential seen in his early years, he still managed to build a career that many would dream of having.
