Cape Verde’s Sidny Lopes Cabral has electrified the football world by claiming the World Cup Goal of the Tournament award, thanks to a breathtaking strike against Argentina in the round of 32. In their first-ever World Cup appearance, Cape Verde pushed the 2022 champions and 2026 finalists to the edge, battling back twice before narrowly falling 3-2 due to an unfortunate own goal from Diney Borges.
Cabral’s goal was a masterclass in technique and composure. The 22-year-old full-back weaved past Argentina’s Alexis Mac Allister with silky footwork before unleashing a curling right-footed shot that left goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez rooted, nestling perfectly into the far corner of the net. This moment of individual brilliance not only levelled the score but also etched Cabral’s name in World Cup history.
Recently acquired by Trabzonspor from Benfica for a €10 million transfer, Cabral’s performance on the grandest stage underscores his rising star status. His goal not only highlighted his attacking prowess but also showcased Cape Verde’s fearless spirit against one of football’s elite nations.
This stunning strike encapsulates the drama and unpredictability of the World Cup, proving that even debutants can deliver moments of sheer genius that captivate the global audience. Sidny Lopes Cabral’s Goal of the Tournament is a testament to his skill and a beacon of hope for Cape Verde’s burgeoning football ambitions.
