Jamie Carragher has apologised to Aston Villa after the club announced its intention to take legal action against the former Liverpool defender over comments about the club.
The football pundit faced a wave of criticism from Villa fans for suggesting that Unai Emery should take over at Manchester United if Michael Carrick were not backed.
The comments on the Stick to Football podcast
During an episode of his podcast, ‘Stick to Football’, Carragher said Aston Villa could never be considered as big as Manchester United, as he discussed the possibility of Emery moving to Old Trafford.
“So Real Madrid will take Man United’s best player, they will take Ronaldo. There are very few clubs above United, and the same applies to Liverpool. But there will be teams below Aston Villa who will take their manager or their players, so shut up, Villa fans. Aston Villa will never be Man United,” he said.
Following the controversy, Carragher used inappropriate language when responding to those fans, telling them to “shut up”, which led Aston Villa’s board to consider legal action.
The apology on social media
The 48-year-old pundit posted a message on X, in which he expressed his regret: “I would like to apologise to Aston Villa, the owners and their fans. My language this week was clumsy and wrong.”
In the message, Carragher explained that his words were meant in a playful way and wished the club luck for their match against Fulham that night. “I can assure Villa fans it was a joke, but I understand it wasn’t taken that way, so I apologise. Good luck today, UTV!”
Manchester United’s situation
Manchester United, meanwhile, suffered another defeat, losing 2-0 to Chelsea, which put them, at least temporarily, in the relegation zone, in a disastrous start to the season for Carrick. According to the report, the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea has increased the pressure on the manager.
Although there has been no official statement from the club about the manager’s future, speculation points to names such as Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann, Antonio Conte and Unai Emery as possible successors. There has also been talk of Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler, who has had an impressive season with the Seagulls.
