The search for a new manager for Celtic is generating waves of excitement among fans, and Charlie Mulgrew, the former defender of the team, has revealed a list of candidates that promises to shake up Scottish football. In a recent appearance on the program “The Breakdown,” Mulgrew did not hesitate to share his preferences for the role, naming three individuals he believes should be considered for the position that will open up this summer.

Mulgrew highlighted Jens Berthel Askou, the current manager of Motherwell, Craig Bellamy, who leads the Wales national team, and Kjetil Knutsen, the head of Bodo/Glimt, as his top choices to take the reins of the club. He argued that each of them brings a unique vision and could be key to Celtic’s future. “I spoke with Joe Ledley the other day and he mentioned Craig Bellamy. He spoke very highly of him, and that made sense to me,” revealed Mulgrew, emphasizing the consideration that Bellamy deserves.

The former player did not stop there, stating that, despite Robbie Keane and Roberto Martinez being in talks, they do not feature among his ideal options. “Robbie Keane is not on my list, not because I have anything against him, but because I don’t know enough about his work. He did well at Ferencvaros, but my three would be Berthel Askou, Craig Bellamy, and the manager of Bodo/Glimt, if we could get in touch with him,” he explained.

When asked about Celtic fans’ acceptance of their candidates, Mulgrew did not shy away and provided a straightforward analysis: “I don’t know if they’re right, but if they’re not, my question would be: ‘who do you realistically think we can get?’ Because thinking we will get someone with an established name is unrealistic. Celtic is a big club, and anyone who comes here loves that, but realistically, it needs to be an opportunity for them to reach the big stage.”

He also reflected on the difficulty of finding a name that carries the same weight as Brendan Rodgers, who, when hired, brought significant prestige. “I don’t know anyone in that category at the moment. Martinez has been mentioned, but it’s not a name I consider,” Mulgrew stated, making it clear that the choice of the next manager should be well thought out and aligned with the club’s expectations and reality.

With the pressure mounting and fans eager to know who will be responsible for leading Celtic to new triumphs, Charlie Mulgrew’s list could very well serve as a guide for the club’s management. The choice of manager will be crucial not only for the upcoming season but also for the long-term future of Celtic.
