Leipzig turned into a battleground hours before the Conference League final between Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano, with violent clashes between fans of the two teams shaking the German city. Local police acted quickly to contain the situation, but not without leaving scars: two arrests were made and several officers sustained minor injuries.
On Tuesday night, approximately 300 fans of Rayo Vallecano, classified by authorities as highly prone to hooligan behavior, gathered in the city center. Tension quickly escalated when a group of around 60 “violent” Crystal Palace supporters moved to the area of the Penguin Ice Bar, deliberately provoking the Spaniards passing by.
Authorities reported that the confrontation unexpectedly began on the terraces of the Leo’s Brasserie and Dhillons bars, where bottles, beer glasses, and even pub furniture were thrown between the rival fans. Physical altercations soon followed, forcing the immediate intervention of federal and state police.
“From 8:00 PM local time, around 300 Rayo fans, classified as high-risk, were gathered in the city center. The confrontation erupted suddenly with Palace fans sitting at outdoor terraces, throwing objects and engaging in physical altercations,” detailed the police of the State of Saxony. The officers present managed to separate the groups, searched more than 300 individuals, and issued dispersal orders to calm the situation.
Despite the intense police operation, which lasted until 3:15 AM the following morning, more than 320 fans were involved in the incidents. Two police officers, one federal and one state, suffered minor injuries during the interventions. Additionally, around 60 problematic fans from Crystal Palace were expelled from the city center.
Interestingly, despite these violent clashes, the official fans’ party at the Leipzig market remained peaceful, with about 2,000 supporters from both teams celebrating the eve of the big game without incident.
This alarming episode casts a dark shadow over the Conference League final, which takes place this Wednesday at 8:00 PM BST, highlighting the urgent need to control violence in football and protect host cities from clashes between rival fans. The Leipzig police have promised to maintain tight surveillance to ensure that the match proceeds without further disturbances.
With the impending clash between Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano, attention will be focused not only on the quality of the football but also on the authorities’ ability to maintain order and security at an event that should be solely a sporting and cultural celebration.
