Arsenal were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after a penalty shootout defeat to Fleetwood Town, and also lost Max Dowman, who was sent off five minutes before the end of the match. The 16-year-old defender was shown a red card after a light touch on opponent Harrison Neal, who was only given a yellow card for a potentially dangerous challenge.
Referee Michael Salisbury’s decision left Mikel Arteta’s side in shock. “How can a teenager’s action be considered violent conduct?” asked one fan on social media, reflecting the widespread outrage.
Arsenal appeal against suspension
Arsenal have already lodged an appeal against Dowman’s suspension and are hoping for a quick response. The absence of VAR during the match could improve the appeal’s chances of success, although previous cases, such as that of Pascal Struijk, whose suspension was overturned, offer some hope.
If the appeal fails, Dowman will be out for three Premier League matches. The first will be next Sunday at Anfield, followed by the games against Hull and Newcastle. However, the young player could still feature in two Champions League matches before returning to the league: against Slavia Prague next Wednesday and Borussia Dortmund on the 24th.
Wing problems for Arteta
Dowman’s situation adds to the squad’s already difficult circumstances, with Bukayo Saka out for about two months with a muscle injury. Noni Madueke, also injured, is expected back by the end of the week, but Arteta faces a serious problem with a lack of options out wide.
Young Ceadach O’Neill, who made his debut on Tuesday, could be a temporary solution, but he is not yet ready for the rigours of the Premier League. If Dowman cannot play, O’Neill could be named on the bench at Anfield.
The uncertainty over Dowman’s suspension puts additional pressure on Arteta and his already depleted squad, ahead of a decisive month in the Premier League.
