Newcastle United sees their European dream crumble after a shocking defeat against Crystal Palace

In an unexpected setback that could prove costly in the battle for qualification to European competitions, Newcastle United were beaten 2-1 at Selhurst Park by Crystal Palace. Eddie Howe’s team not only lost crucial points but also missed the chance to secure two consecutive away wins in the Premier League for the first time since April 2025, a sign that consistency remains a problem.

This defeat comes at a time when Crystal Palace was in high spirits, following their victory on Thursday night in the first leg of the UEFA Conference League quarter-finals against Fiorentina. However, recent figures showed a somewhat unstable Palace after European matches, having only one win in nine Premier League games immediately following continental encounters (2 draws, 6 defeats).

Palace manager Oliver Glasner fielded a team with several changes, clearly revealing his priorities, but the home side appeared comfortable during the first half-hour of play, a period of low intensity with few chances, reflecting Palace’s difficulty in scoring at their stadium, where they hold one of the worst records in the Premier League with just four goals scored in the first half-hour of home games this season.

The game came to life when Aaron Ramsdale made two decisive saves, first from a curled shot by Yeremy Pino and then denying a powerful shot from Daniel Muñoz. After these initial shots on target, Palace pressed with Jaydee Canvot heading over from a corner inside the small area, and Lewis Hall preventing Muñoz from finishing after a dangerous run into the opposition’s penalty area.

However, just as Palace seemed to gain control, a fatal mistake occurred two minutes before half-time: Maxence Lacroix attempted to intercept a low cross from Lewis Miley but took the effect off the ball, allowing William Osula to finish improvisingly and put Newcastle ahead.

In the second half, the pace remained low, with Palace struggling to create clear chances. Dean Henderson, the visitors’ goalkeeper, was crucial in denying a clear opportunity to Osula, who had found a good angle to shoot. Pino shot wide in a dangerous situation, and Glasner responded by making three attacking substitutions in an attempt to turn the result around.

In the 80th minute, substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta equalised with a powerful header that beat Ramsdale, after an intelligent assist from Tyrick Mitchell, who kept calm under pressure. The drama intensified in stoppage time when Lerma fell inside the area after contact with Sven Botman, allowing Mateta to convert the penalty that sealed a historic comeback for Crystal Palace.

This victory marks only the fourth home win for the Eagles in the Premier League this season (with 7 draws and 5 defeats), a number that must increase if the team wants to avoid a mediocre end to the season in the table. On the other hand, Newcastle suffers their second defeat in 11 recent direct confrontations against Palace (5 wins, 4 draws), dropping to 14th position in the standings and falling behind their opponents from yesterday.

This defeat is not just a stain on the Magpies’ campaign but a real blow to the club’s European ambitions, which now will have to fight even harder to return to the top places in the Premier League. Crystal Palace, for their part, proves that even on less bright days, they know how to seize opportunities to surprise and pick up crucial points in the league.
