A controversial episode stirred social media following Italy’s victory over Northern Ireland in the World Cup playoff semifinals. Federico Dimarco and a group of his Italian teammates were caught celebrating Bosnia and Herzegovina’s win over Wales, a moment that divided opinions and sparked accusations of arrogance.

On Thursday night, Italy triumphed in Bergamo with a convincing 2-0 victory, securing their place in the final against the Bosnians, who achieved a dramatic penalty shootout win in Cardiff. The celebration among the Italian players, which included Dimarco, Guglielmo Vicario, and Pio Esposito, began shortly after the final whistle in Bergamo, when Kerim Alajbegović converted the decisive penalty for Bosnia, sealing the victory 4-2.

The reason behind the Italian players’ celebration is not entirely clear, but many speculate it is due to Italy facing an opponent considered inferior, given that Wales is ranked 35th in the FIFA rankings, while Bosnia and Herzegovina is in 66th place. This gesture, which could be interpreted as relief or jubilation, quickly became the target of criticism.

On social media, discontent quickly emerged. A Twitter user, under the handle Bosnian Football, fired off: “Look at this disrespect and arrogance from Italy. They were already celebrating after we won on penalties. We will keep that in mind in Zenica!” The message reflects the outrage of many Bosnian fans at what they consider disrespectful behavior.

On the other hand, Italian fans also expressed their concern. One of them commented: “It’s not right to celebrate now. We celebrate on Tuesday. We need to show respect for Bosnia and the opponent we still have to face. We must stay focused and never go in thinking we are the strongest.”

Meanwhile, other theories have emerged attempting to explain the players’ behavior. Some suggest that the celebration may have been a relief at not having to face Wales in Cardiff, while others argue that the Inter players, who were in the group, were simply happy for their former teammate, Edin Dzeko, and his team.

Tension is rising as the final in Zenica approaches, where Italy will have the opportunity to prove that their confidence is not just arrogance, but rather a belief in their abilities. Meanwhile, the watchful eyes of fans and critics promise a confrontation filled with emotion and anticipation.
