Scandal and outrage mark Egypt's elimination from the 2026 World Cup, with players openly denouncing the officiating and suggesting favoritism towards Argentina. The Egyptian setback, which came after the team led 2-0 and ended in a 3-2 defeat against Argentina in the Round of 16, ignited a wave of anger that transcended the locker room and reached the public statements of the players involved.

Midfielder Mostafa Ziko, who scored one of Egypt's goals, did not hold back after the final whistle, launching fierce criticisms at referee François Letexier and the way he believes the game was officiated. “It's not fair, it's not fair! The referee is not fair! It's an injustice… a clear and obvious injustice! He ruined the effort of an entire nation… From the start of the game, he was against us. No… we can't be eliminated like this, leading 2-0 against Argentina? This is a rigged tournament!” accused the Pyramids player, in an impassioned and emotional tone.

The protest against the French officiating team had already been initiated by head coach Hossam Hassan, who pointed fingers at FIFA, insinuating that there was an interest in keeping Lionel Messi in the competition: “They want Messi to continue in the World Cup.” Mostafa Ziko, in his own way, quickly echoed the outrage, adding: “I apologize to them. We really wanted to bring them joy today… but we couldn't. But, I swear to God, it didn't depend on us, it depended on the referee… The tournament is made for them [to win], it has been obvious from the start. Congratulations to Argentina on the World Cup. They don't need anything else.” The Egyptian midfielder concluded the flash interview with ironic applause, further emphasizing the tone of protest.

The controversy is unlikely to fade anytime soon, with Egyptian accusations casting doubt on the integrity of the competition and fueling heated discussions among fans and experts. The atmosphere of suspicion created after this encounter could shape how the 2026 World Cup is remembered, at least for the Egyptian people and those who share the sense of injustice expressed by Ziko and coach Hassan.
