Gareth Bale, one of the brightest stars in world football, revealed fascinating details about a transfer that could have changed the course of his career. In a recent appearance on the podcast “Stick to Football,” Bale dispelled the mystery surrounding his potential move to Manchester United in the summer of 2013, stating that he never intended to sign for the club, despite discussions with then-manager David Moyes.

At the time, Bale had already demonstrated his worth at Tottenham Hotspur, especially after the disappointment of failing to qualify for the Champions League, finishing just one point behind Arsenal. It was clear that the Welshman had outgrown the London club, attracting the attention of giants like Real Madrid, who would ultimately secure his signing for an impressive $133 million (£85 million, €100 million). However, Manchester United was also in the running and made a bid higher than that of the Spaniards.

“I did actually speak to United, yes. They made a bigger offer than Real Madrid,” the player revealed. When asked if he ever considered joining United, Bale was direct: “No.”

In a revelation that left many fans surprised, Bale explained that he had a “gentleman’s agreement” with Daniel Levy, the president of Tottenham, who did not want to strengthen a direct rival in the Premier League. “I had something arranged with Daniel Levy, more of a gentleman’s agreement, because he didn’t want to sell me to a rival – you don’t want to strengthen another team,” Bale said. “So, if a team came in [for me] from Spain, Italy, Germany, wherever it may be, I could potentially go. If we didn’t qualify for the Champions League, which we didn’t, then I could leave.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United, in search of rejuvenation following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, ended up signing Marouane Fellaini from Everton, paying more than necessary due to an expired release clause, hoping to facilitate negotiations. The result? A disappointing seventh place in the Premier League, the worst in the club’s modern history.

On the other hand, Bale flourished in Madrid, winning everything over eight seasons. In his first season, he scored the winning goal in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona and the decisive goal in the Champions League final against Atlético de Madrid. Despite injuries that brought him some criticism and a prolonged battle with the Spanish press, his on-field performance was exceptional, with 176 goals and assists in 258 matches, as well as five Champions League titles among the 16 trophies won.

Thus, while Manchester United attempted to find its way after a golden era, Gareth Bale established himself as one of the best players in the world, proving that the right decisions can lead to a career filled with glory.
