In short
  • Greece beat Germany 1-0 at Augsburg, their first-ever win over Germany, thanks to Dimitrios Kourbelis's second-half goal.
  • The result left Jurgen Klopp still without a victory in his two matches as Germany's new head coach.
  • Germany dominated possession and chances but failed to score, with Greece's goal coming after Tzolis's cutback deflected off Joshua Kimmich.

Greece Shocks Germany with Historic 1-0 Win, Leaving Jurgen Klopp Still Searching for First Victory

In a stunning upset at Augsburg, Greece secured their maiden victory over Germany, courtesy of a decisive second-half goal from Dimitrios Kourbelis. This 1-0 triumph marks Greece’s first-ever head-to-head win against the Germans and leaves Jurgen Klopp without a victory after two matches as the new German head coach.

Germany entered the contest eager to bounce back following a late defeat to the Netherlands that spoiled Klopp’s managerial return to international football. Despite dominating possession and chances, the German side struggled to convert their superiority into goals. Karim Adeyemi, the standout attacker for Germany, threatened with several attempts, including a powerful shot from the edge of the box that was expertly saved, but failed to find the net.

The first half ended goalless, breaking Germany’s recent streak of scoring or conceding in their last 10 games. As the second half unfolded, Germany continued to press forward but remained ineffective in breaking down a resilient Greek defence. The visitors capitalised on Germany’s attacking desperation and growing gaps at the back. In the 73rd minute, Arsenal forward Christos Tzolis narrowly missed a chance after a swift counterattack, his cross failing to connect with a teammate.

Just moments later, Greece delivered the knockout blow. Tzolis once again surged down the flank, this time delivering a cutback that deflected off Joshua Kimmich and found Kourbelis at the edge of the box. The midfielder’s shot deceived German goalkeeper Alexander Nubel, sealing the historic win for Greece.

Germany’s inability to respond after falling behind exposed a lack of attacking cohesion and creativity, much to Klopp’s frustration. With their next fixture against Serbia looming, Germany face mounting pressure to secure their first win in four matches.

Meanwhile, Greece’s back-to-back victories elevate them to the top of Group A2, ending a four-match losing streak against Germany and signalling a potential shift in the group dynamics. This remarkable result not only boosts Greek confidence but also serves a stark warning to their upcoming opponents in this fiercely contested UEFA Nations League campaign.
