Joško Gvardiol’s stoppage-time strike secured a dramatic 2-1 victory for Manchester City as Enzo Maresca marked his Premier League managerial debut with a win over Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium. The late goal extended City’s dominance over the Cherries to ten consecutive league wins, underscoring their relentless superiority in this fixture.
Manchester City fielded their youngest starting lineup for an opening Premier League match since the 2008/09 season under Mark Hughes, with an average age of 22 years and 360 days. Despite trailing at halftime, City overturned the deficit to claim their first comeback victory in the Premier League since March 2024, ending a ten-match winless streak after being behind at the interval. This performance highlighted Maresca’s immediate impact on the squad’s resilience and tactical adaptability.
Rayan Cherki played a pivotal role once again, registering his fourth assist in just three Premier League appearances against Bournemouth, further cementing his reputation as a key creative force against this opponent. The young winger’s vision and precision proved instrumental in City’s offensive efforts throughout the match.
Gvardiol’s decisive goal in the 91st minute capped off a thrilling finale, snatching all three points for the hosts and igniting celebrations for Maresca and the City faithful. This landmark victory not only reinforces Manchester City’s commanding record against Bournemouth but also sets a positive tone for Maresca’s tenure at the helm in England’s top flight.
