Lionel Messi delivered a moment of footballing history off the pitch after Argentina’s 3-1 extra-time triumph over Switzerland in the 2026 World Cup quarter-final. In an unforgettable gesture that captured the reverence between two of football’s greatest icons, Messi presented his match-worn Argentina shirt to Italian legend Roberto Baggio, who was in attendance at Kansas City’s electrifying showdown.
The encounter between the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and the Italian maestro quickly became the image of the night, as cameras captured Messi and Baggio standing side by side—two legendary no.10s united by mutual respect and a love for the beautiful game. Baggio, whose status in world football remains undiminished decades after his own World Cup heroics, was all smiles as he accepted the cherished memorabilia from the man widely hailed as the greatest player of all time.
Baggio’s gratitude was immediate and heartfelt. Taking to Instagram to commemorate the moment, the Italian legend posted a photograph of himself beaming with pride alongside Messi, holding the prized shirt. “Thank you, Leo, for your precious gift and for your affection. I love you lots, my friend,” Baggio wrote, his message underscoring the powerful bond shared by football’s royalty.
Argentina’s victory against Switzerland, sealed in dramatic fashion after extra time, propelled the South American giants into the World Cup semi-finals for the third time in four tournaments. Messi’s influence on the pitch was, as ever, decisive, but his actions after the final whistle ensured the night would be remembered for more than just the football. The symbolic exchange with Baggio adds a new chapter to the legacy of both men, illustrating how greatness respects greatness across generations and national borders.
As the world’s media and fans alike share the iconic image of Messi and Baggio, the moment stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of football—a language spoken by legends, understood by millions, and immortalized by simple gestures that transcend the outcome of any match.
