Lisandro Martinez breaks down in tears after injury forces him off in World Cup final

Lisandro Martinez’s World Cup dream ended in heartbreak as the Manchester United defender was forced off the pitch in tears during the final against Spain. Martinez, who had been a pillar in Argentina’s backline throughout the tournament, was substituted just before half-time after suffering an injury, leaving the field visibly distraught and unable to contain his emotion.

Paired with Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero at the heart of defence, Martinez started the final with high hopes. However, his night unravelled in the 44th minute when he went down following a physically demanding first half. Only moments earlier, he had been booked for a late challenge on Mikel Oyarzabal, halting a dangerous Spanish counter-attack and underlining the high-stakes tension that defined the opening period.

Spain seized control from the outset, dominating possession with a commanding 65 percent share and pressing relentlessly. The European champions created the more dangerous opportunities, registering three shots before the break, two of which forced Argentina’s goalkeeper Emi Martinez into action. The most threatening moment came in the fifth minute, when Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal drove into the box, only for a joint defensive effort from Lisandro Martinez and Emi Martinez to deny the Spanish prodigy.

Despite the mounting pressure, Argentina’s defence remained resolute, sitting deep with Lionel Messi deployed as the lone forward. In the 39th minute, Oyarzabal again tested the Argentine defence after being set up by Fabian Ruiz, but Emi Martinez produced a crucial save to keep the match goalless. Just four minutes later, Marc Cucurella curled a shot narrowly wide, further intensifying Spain’s grip on the game.

Lisandro Martinez’s injury struck at a critical juncture. After hitting the ground, it quickly became apparent that he could not continue. The visibly emotional defender was consoled by Emi Martinez before being replaced by Nicolas Otamendi, a change that symbolised the cruel twists of fate football so often delivers on its grandest stage. Martinez, with his head in his hands, was seen weeping on the bench, the anguish of being sidelined in a World Cup final painfully evident.

Martinez’s premature exit was a bitter blow for an Argentina side already under siege and struggling for attacking impetus—they failed to register a single shot in the first half. His absence marked a turning point, leaving fans and teammates alike to contemplate what might have been had their defensive cornerstone remained on the pitch.
