Man Utd deny Ederson transfer collapse amid conflicting reports and medical concerns

Manchester United’s pursuit of Brazilian midfielder Ederson has erupted into chaos, with the highly anticipated transfer now mired in uncertainty following a flurry of contradictory reports and behind-the-scenes drama.

Despite months of negotiations and multiple outlets, including Sky Sport Italia and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, declaring the deal dead after talks reportedly collapsed, the Old Trafford hierarchy are refusing to concede defeat. United insiders maintain that the transfer is still alive, countering mounting speculation that the agreement has fallen apart.

United’s interest in the Atalanta midfielder seemed all but sealed last month, when Sky Sports News revealed that the clubs had reached a £34 million agreement with an additional £3.8 million in potential bonuses. Ederson himself fuelled expectations, telling reporters after Brazil’s group-stage triumph over Haiti, “Certainly, everything is almost done.” His confidence stoked anticipation among United fans eager for midfield reinforcements.

However, the transfer has unravelled in recent days due to complications over Ederson’s medical assessment. Following Brazil’s exit from the World Cup, Manchester United demanded a series of intensive medical tests, reportedly due to concerns regarding the player’s recent injury history. These examinations, which concluded only days ago, triggered a dramatic shift in the saga.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that United formally informed Atalanta of their withdrawal from negotiations, citing a “change of plans.” The midfielder is now expected to return to training under Maurizio Sarri in Bergamo, casting significant doubt over his Premier League move.

Atalanta, for their part, have vehemently dismissed any suggestion that Ederson’s fitness was an issue. The Serie A club insists the Brazilian is in peak condition, highlighting his inclusion in Brazil’s World Cup squad, and attributing United’s change of heart to shifting transfer priorities rather than medical concerns. Atalanta are now said to be preparing a contract extension in a bid to secure Ederson’s long-term future.

Despite the turbulence, United are adamant that the door remains open. According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, sources within the club deny the transfer is completely off, suggesting that the deal could yet be revived, even as negotiations become increasingly fraught.

The uncertainty surrounding Ederson’s future comes as United overhaul their midfield. The club has already secured a £48 million deal for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, and Wolves’ Joao Gomes has emerged as a fresh target should talks with Ederson ultimately collapse.
