Manchester United has triggered the £35 million release clause in Youri Tielemans' contract with Aston Villa, preparing to finalize the signing this week. The 29-year-old Belgian midfielder has already traveled to Manchester to undergo the first part of his medical examinations, with a long-term contract expected. Fabrizio Romano revealed that the player is excited about the move.

On Monday morning, David Ornstein reported that negotiations were progressing, and just a few hours later, United activated the clause, set at €41 million. Aston Villa was unable to prevent the transfer or negotiate a higher fee. This signing comes after Manchester United's failed attempt to sign Ederson, a midfielder from Atalanta, whose deal collapsed following additional medical examinations requested by the English team, despite a financial agreement having been reached for around £34 million.

Manager Michael Carrick is facing difficulties in midfield this season. Casemiro left at the end of his contract, while Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee ligament injury during the World Cup, which will require a lengthy recovery. Tielemans made 47 appearances for Aston Villa last season, standing out for his composure on the ball, passing quality, and set-piece effectiveness. Manchester United believes that £35 million is a fair price for a player with over 200 games in the Premier League.

Unai Emery planned to structure Aston Villa's midfield around Tielemans, Amadou Onana, and Boubacar Kamara. However, Onana suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during the World Cup, forcing the club to seek at least two signings for that position. The Belgian midfielder is believed to have preferred a move to Manchester United, which offers him the opportunity to play in the Champions League. A verbal agreement was quickly reached following the English club's advances.

Tielemans is the second confirmed signing for Manchester United this summer, joining Andrey Santos, whose £50 million transfer from Chelsea is also agreed and awaiting official announcement. This duo of signings points to a clear strategy from United to strengthen the midfield following significant losses.
