Olympique de Marseille took a giant step towards the European elite by securing a resounding 3-1 victory over Metz in a thrilling clash of the 29th round of Ligue 1. This triumph not only catapulted the team chaired by Habib Beye to third place in the standings — a position that guarantees direct access to the Champions League — but also put direct pressure on Lille, who still have a game in hand this Sunday against Toulouse.

The match at the legendary Vélodrome Stadium began at a frenetic pace, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wasted no time in making his mark, opening the scoring in just 13 minutes. Shortly after the interval, it was the turn of young prodigy Igor Paixão to extend the lead at 48 minutes, giving the impression that Marseille was controlling the match with authority. However, Metz’s response was swift: a minute later, Georgian Tsitasihvili pulled one back for the visitors, reigniting the visiting team’s hopes and creating a tense atmosphere until the final minutes. Calm was only restored with Hamed Traoré’s decisive goal in stoppage time, which sealed the victory and sent the fans present into raptures.

With this victory, Marseille now has 52 points on the table, momentarily surpassing Lille, who may respond on Sunday. This result increases the ambition of the French club, which does not hide its desire to return to the Champions League, a competition where it has shone in the past.

In stark contrast, Monaco experienced a night to forget. The Principality’s team was humiliated on the ground of Paris FC, suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat. The match started in the worst possible way for the Monegasques, with Ikoné opening the scoring in just 4 minutes. Immediately, Ciro Immobile took centre stage, scoring two goals in quick succession (at 8 and 21 minutes), putting Paris FC in a comfortable position. Monaco tried to respond with a goal from Balogun at 46 minutes, but young Koleosho, at 71 minutes, delivered the final blow that buried the team’s aspirations. Paul Pogba, who returned to the pitch after a long absence since December, came on at 69 minutes, but even his presence couldn’t save Monaco from a humiliating defeat.

With 49 points, Monaco now finds itself threatened by direct rivals like Lyon and Rennes in the fight for places that grant access to European competitions. The pressure is mounting for the Monegasques, who urgently need to react to avoid compromising the season.

This weekend promises to be decisive for the battle at the top of Ligue 1, with Marseille showing strength and ambition, while Monaco and Lille fight not to lose ground in an increasingly fierce race. The battle for direct access to the Champions League is heating up and promises strong emotions until the final whistle.
