Olympique de Marseille players have rejected the pay cuts proposed by the club, which is facing a serious financial crisis. The team are being forced to make further reductions to honour the promises made to the DNCG and UEFA, despite the significant efforts made during the summer.

In the summer transfer window, the club were forced to sell players en masse, but were unable to make a single signing.

Meeting with the DNCG in December

Marseille’s board has a meeting scheduled with the DNCG for December, which will influence the decisions to be taken in the next transfer window, in January. More players may need to be sold, while buying options remain scarce, making it difficult to bring in reinforcements.

The institution’s financial difficulties are leading the club’s directors to look for ways of saving money, including attempts to reduce players’ wages.

Players reluctant to accept reduction

Those attempts have not been successful, as the players have shown reluctance to accept a wage cut. Igor Paixão, one of the players, had previously expressed a willingness to consider a salary sacrifice. “If I have to reduce my salary to help the club, it’s the best thing to do… and then increase it,” said the winger.

Despite that openness, the proposal did not result in a solution for reducing the club’s expenses.

The situation at Marseille raises questions about the club’s financial stability and its ability to compete at the highest level. The players’ refusal could worsen the crisis, with a potentially negative impact on squad morale and on-pitch performance. With the transfer window approaching, Olympique de Marseille face a decisive month for their immediate future.
