In short
  • Martin Odegaard fiercely condemned Bernardo Silva's reckless late tackle during Norway's clash with Portugal.
  • Odegaard said the challenge came after he had released the ball and that Silva was merely shown a yellow card.
  • Odegaard called the tackle embarrassing and unacceptable, and said Silva never apologised.

Norway and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard fiercely condemned Real Madrid’s Bernardo Silva for a reckless late tackle that left him writhing in pain during Norway’s clash with Portugal. The incident unfolded in stoppage time when Odegaard had already released the ball, only to be met by Silva’s aggressive challenge targeting his Achilles tendon or ankle. Despite the severity of the foul, Silva was merely shown a yellow card, while Odegaard endured treatment on the pitch but managed to finish the game.

Speaking to the media after the match, Odegaard did not hold back in his criticism. “It has no place on a football pitch. It’s embarrassing that people do things like that,” the Arsenal skipper told tv2.no. He described the challenge as a loss of composure from Silva, who “just kicks me long after I’ve played the ball.” The Norwegian captain expressed bafflement at the tackle, questioning Silva’s intentions and condemning the act as completely unacceptable.

When pressed about whether Silva’s Premier League history with Manchester City influenced the tackle, Odegaard was blunt: “You’d have to ask him about that. I don’t know what he’s up to.” He reiterated the lack of any apology from Silva, underscoring the unprofessional nature of the challenge. “That kind of thing doesn’t belong on a football pitch,” Odegaard added, emphasizing the disgraceful conduct displayed by the Real Madrid star.

Bernardo Silva refrained from addressing the Norwegian press directly but did respond briefly when questioned about Odegaard’s reaction after the incident, leaving a cloud of tension hanging over the encounter. Odegaard’s outspoken remarks highlight a growing frustration with overly aggressive play, especially when it crosses the line into dangerous territory.

This incident not only marred a crucial international fixture but also sparked a heated debate about discipline and respect on the field. Odegaard’s public denunciation of Silva’s tackle sends a strong message about the standards expected from top-level professionals in football.
