Michael Carrick, the current interim manager of Manchester United, expressed his pride in the values of equality and diversity that the club has always upheld. This statement comes at a delicate time, following the controversial remark made by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who claimed that the United Kingdom has been “colonized by immigrants.” His words were quickly condemned, not only by prominent figures such as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer but also by all major supporters’ groups of the club.
Ratcliffe, although he attempted to soften the situation with a qualified apology, failed to prevent the controversy from spreading. In response, Manchester United issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to inclusion and diversity initiatives. Speaking to the press for the first time since the incident, Carrick emphasized the importance of these values to the club. “I am proud of what the club stands for and what it has done over the years,” Carrick stated. “I am very aware of that.”
The interim coach, who took over the team following Ruben Amorim’s departure, emphasized that his many years of experience at the club have allowed him to understand the responsibility they have towards the global community. “I have traveled the world and I know what this club means to many people. I am fully aware of the responsibility, and we try to fulfill it every day,” he added.
Although Ratcliffe is known for being a Brexit supporter and has well-documented views on immigration, the language used in his recent comments has sparked criticism. Experts argue that, given his status as one of the wealthiest men in the UK and his association with a global brand like Manchester United, he should be more cautious in his statements.
Carrick, who wore a green badge from the “Unite for Access” initiative aimed at promoting equality and a more inclusive matchday experience for fans with disabilities, reiterated the importance of understanding diversity in all its forms. “The part of being at this club is that we understand what it means globally and the responsibilities we have within that,” he said.
Diversity is a fundamental pillar at Manchester United, and Carrick has the task of managing a group that includes players from 16 different countries. Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson has already highlighted diversity as a crucial weapon for the team’s success. Carrick expressed confidence that Ratcliffe’s comments will not harm the squad’s unity, especially at a time when the team is fighting for qualification for the Champions League. “We have a really strong group. Whether it’s the players in the locker room, the coaching staff, or the personnel, we are in constant communication and here to support and help in the best way possible,” Carrick concluded.
As Manchester United prepares to face upcoming challenges, the focus on inclusion and diversity remains more relevant than ever, reflecting not only the club’s values but also its vision for the future.
