The race for the permanent manager position at Manchester United is gaining new momentum, with Michael Carrick being considered one of the strongest candidates for the role. Since taking over as interim manager in January, Carrick has not only stabilized the team but has also revitalized it impressively, accumulating six wins and just one loss in eight matches. His management has been a breath of fresh air, putting Manchester United back in the fight for a spot in the Champions League.

Despite Carrick’s remarkable performance, the club’s board is opting for a cautious approach. Internal sources have revealed that Manchester United’s leadership will not rush into making announcements regarding Carrick’s appointment, even though many see him as the ideal candidate. Sporting director Jason Wilcox made it clear that the choice of the next permanent manager will only be made after a thorough and rigorous assessment of the market, involving a range of competing options.

Wilcox, who works closely with CEO Omar Berrada and head of recruitment Christopher Vivell, is leading the search for a new manager while simultaneously focusing on building the long-term football structure that will support the next management. Transfer expert Graeme Bailey commented on Carrick’s current situation, highlighting the excitement within the club regarding what the former player can bring to the team’s future.

“The people at United are really excited about Michael Carrick and what he has done so far,” Bailey stated. However, the board wants to avoid past mistakes, particularly the haste that marked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure. “This situation feels different. There is a genuine belief that Carrick could be the ideal manager for the club in the long term,” he added.

While Carrick is reaping the rewards of his success, the Manchester United recruitment team is determined not to rush the decision. “Jason Wilcox is pleased, but he is not resting on his laurels. He and Christopher Vivell are active in the market, talking to potential options and laying the groundwork for the club’s future,” Bailey explained.

In addition to the search for a new manager, Manchester United is preparing for a busy summer in the transfer market, with the possibility of up to six new signings. The priorities include a mobile defensive midfielder and a second midfielder, especially if Manuel Ugarte’s departure materializes. Furthermore, the club is looking for a dynamic forward who can play on the wings and in various attacking positions, considering the potential sale of Joshua Zirkzee. The defense will also be a focus, with a left-back and a center-back on the wish list.

Currently, the Manchester United board is categorically avoiding labeling Carrick as the favorite for the position. “At this moment, the club is not naming Carrick as the favorite,” Bailey revealed. However, the atmosphere within the club is one of optimism, with everyone acknowledging the positive impact Carrick has had so far. This caution in selecting the next manager reflects the club’s determination to avoid the mistakes of the past, especially after the complicated experience with former manager Ruben Amorim.

As the situation unfolds, it becomes clear that the future of Manchester United rests in the hands of a management team that seeks not only immediate results but also a long-term vision that solidifies the club’s position among the giants of European football. Carrick may be the right man for this mission, but the board is committed to ensuring that all options are carefully considered before making a final decision.
