Mikel Arteta has cemented his legacy at Arsenal by signing a contract extension that will keep him at the helm until the end of the 2029-30 season. The 44-year-old Spaniard, who took charge in December 2019, is now the longest-serving manager in the Premier League and is fully committed to steering the Gunners through a new era of success.
Arteta’s tenure at Arsenal has already been marked by significant achievements, including triumphs in the 2019-20 FA Cup and the landmark 2025-26 Premier League title. He also masterminded Arsenal’s run to the 2025-26 Champions League Final, underscoring his impact on the club’s resurgence among Europe’s elite. This extension signals the club’s faith in Arteta’s vision and ambition to expand Arsenal’s trophy cabinet further.
Having ended his playing career at Arsenal after stints with Barcelona’s academy, PSG, Glasgow Rangers, Real Sociedad, and Everton, Arteta’s deep connection with the club runs beyond the managerial role. His 62.05% win rate—the highest in Arsenal’s history—speaks volumes about his effectiveness, especially considering his relatively limited senior coaching experience prior to Arsenal, where he was an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
This contract extension positions Arteta among the Premier League’s managerial elite, with the potential for a tenure reminiscent of the long-standing reigns of legends like Arsene Wenger. Wenger’s “Invincibles” season remains a benchmark of sustained excellence, while contemporaries such as Jurgen Klopp, Sir Alex Ferguson, and Pep Guardiola have all etched their names into history with multiple trophies, including Champions League glory. Arsenal’s commitment to Arteta suggests they expect him to reach similar heights.
Arteta’s new deal also safeguards Arsenal’s interests against potential suitors targeting the Spaniard, ensuring that the Gunners retain a manager with a pedigree shaped by formative years at Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy and experience at Paris Saint-Germain.
Reflecting on his contract renewal, Arteta expressed his profound connection to the club and its supporters: “It’s a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal. This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue.”
He continued, “We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together. I’m extremely grateful to Stan and Josh for their trust and support, and feel honoured to be leading this club through such a special period in its 140-year history.”
Emphasizing the emotional weight of the moment, Arteta concluded, “This is such a proud moment for me and my family. I feel the love and respect from our fantastic supporters, and they have mine – and ours – in return.”
With this landmark commitment, Arsenal is setting the stage for a defining chapter under Arteta’s stewardship, aiming to build on past triumphs and forge a legacy worthy of the club’s storied history.
